This 2-hour CE course provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive review of pharmacologic therapies used in the management of acne vulgaris. Grounded in current clinical guidelines and dermatologic evidence, the course covers both first-line and adjunctive treatment options for patients across varying age groups and acne severity levels. It is designed for clinicians in primary care, dermatology, pediatrics, and women’s health settings who play a central role in diagnosing and managing acne.
The course begins with an overview of acne pathophysiology, including the roles of follicular hyperkeratinization, increased sebum production, Cutibacterium acnes proliferation, and inflammation. Participants will learn to assess acne severity using standardized grading scales and to individualize therapy based on lesion type, patient characteristics, and risk for scarring or hyperpigmentation.
Topical agents such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, and azelaic acid are explored in detail, with guidance on their mechanisms of action, appropriate application, and common adverse effects. Systemic therapies—including oral antibiotics, hormonal treatments (such as combined oral contraceptives and spironolactone), and isotretinoin—are reviewed, with emphasis on appropriate indications, monitoring requirements, and management of adverse effects.
Special considerations are addressed for adolescent patients, pregnant individuals, and patients with treatment-resistant or nodulocystic acne. The course also highlights the importance of medication adherence, patient education, and maintenance therapy to achieve long-term skin clearance and reduce recurrence.
