This course introduced the symptoms and etiology of hypertension and the underlying pathophysiology of the disease. We cover important points about the evaluation of the patient with hypertension and important teaching points in patient education. Both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments were addressed. The pharmacologic therapies that we discussed include:

  • Diuretics
  • Beta blockers
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Alpha1 receptor blockers
  • Centrally acting alpha2 agonists
  • Vasodilators.
